Why the change from 5 Nodes to 3 Nodes? There were several reasons for this. However, the main reason was that the 5 nodes free program had become too costly (research and development costs, support, and maintenance), and it was impacting too heavily on our ability to generate the income we need to make and maintain Portainer.

5 Nodes Free

- All existing 5 Nodes Free licenses will remain 5 Nodes including at renewal.

- The license issuance term will be changed from 3 years to 1 year with the ability to renew each subsequent year.

- 5 Nodes Free remains “Free” as long as 5 Nodes or below are in use.

- If you need more than 5 Nodes, purchase a Home and Student, Starter, Professional, or Enterprise license.

3 Nodes Free (New)

- 3 Nodes Free remains “Free” as long as 3 Nodes or below are in use.

- If you need more than 3 Nodes, purchase a Home and Student, Starter, Professional, or Enterprise license.

Home and Student

- The list price of Portainer Home and Student Edition will remain the same.

- Portainer Home and Student will no longer state, “Adds 10 Nodes to 5 Nodes free (max 15 Nodes).”

- Portainer Home and Student Edition will include 15 Nodes with a maximum capability of managing 15 Nodes.

- When transitioning from 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) to Portainer Home & Student, the existing 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) license will be revoked.

Starter (New)

- The price of Portainer Business Edition Starter will be $995/year and include the following:

5 Nodes
Community support
Credit Card purchases only
Click through EULA
Only one Starter license per instance
Requires Portainer version 2.18.4 or newer

- When transitioning from 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) to Portainer Business Edition Starter, the existing 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) license will be revoked.

Professional

- The list price of Portainer Business Edition Professional will decrease by $905 to $2995 per year.

- 5 Nodes will no longer be included in Portainer Business Edition Professional.

- Portainer Business Edition Professional will manage a maximum of 50 Nodes.

- When transitioning from 5 Nodes Free to Portainer Business Edition Professional, the existing 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) license will be revoked.

Enterprise

- The list price of Portainer Business Edition Enterprise remains the same.

- 5 Nodes will no longer be included in Business Edition Enterprise.

- Portainer Business Edition Enterprise will be required to manage more than 50 Nodes.

- Portainer Business Edition Enterprise includes an assigned Success Engineer with prioritized, 9x5 support in your time zone.

- Portainer Business Edition Enterprise will include a custom MSSA, if necessary.

- When transitioning from the 5 Nodes Free to Portainer Business Edition Enterprise, the existing 5 Nodes Free (or 3 Nodes Free) license will be revoked.

Node(s)

- A “node” can be described as a “server” (whether this is an actual physical server, a VM, a Raspberry Pi, your desktop or laptop, an industrial computer, or an embedded computing device) that is capable of running containers (via Docker, Kubernetes or another orchestrator) which is either running the Portainer Server or is under the management of a Portainer Server installation.
