Industrial IoT Management

Portainer's fleet management can onboard, manage and deploy workloads across hundreds of devices, quickly and securely, from a single interface.

In the world of Industrial IoT, reliability is paramount. You need a platform that you can rely on to deploy the applications that power your factory intelligence or automation systems. Regardless if you are starting an Industry 4 project, or are well entrenched, it will become evident that deploying and managing software in the field requires a centralized management tool.

  • In the past...

In the past, software was installed onto devices, the devices deployed in the field, and then largely left alone for 10 years, until it was time for replacement. While this might have been okay when the software was proprietary, special purpose, and your systems largely disconnected from any external networking, the world has changed.
  • Now...

Now the modern Industrial IoT stack includes software built from open-source components, and the software almost always expects network connectivity to function. This exposes you to risks and requires you to regularly update your software. When you are talking about hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of devices (PLCs, Industrial PCs, Open IoT sensors), keeping their software up to date becomes an arduous task.

This is where Portainer comes in.

  • Portainer lets you quickly onboard your Linux powered Industrial compute devices, and regardless if they run Docker, Podman, or even a lightweight Kubernetes distro, Portainer will allow you to centrally configure, secure, and deploy applications to them.
  • Portainer has an in-built fleet manager capability which lets you logically organize your devices into groups that make sense to you. You can then deploy software and configurations to these groups of devices. Not only that but you can take actions on the devices, such as performing firmware and OS updates. With Portainer’s advanced “edge” agent, your remote devices can be managed regardless of the network security you employ (IT/OT segmentation), air-gapped, any even highly latent radio networks.
  • Portainer lets you easily secure your remote devices by locking down the capabilities exposed through the use of containers. You can strictly control how deeply applications can interact with the physical device and the device operating system.
  • Finally, Portainer is 100% self-hosted, freeing you from being locked to a single cloud vendor, or having to accept the security risks of being managed by a SaaS management tool.

"We see an increasing number of customers who need to operate machine connectivity efficiently as a component of larger Industrial IoT solutions. Softing’s containerized connectivity products and Portainer make machine connectivity easy to use and easy to scale in production environments - an ideal combination for many organizations and users at the interface between IT and OT."

"Our OPC Router is a no-code software for connecting cloud, ERP systems, databases and devices that have been proven in the industry for almost 20 years. With Portainer's similar no-code approach, the use cases of the OPC Router are easily orchestrated and rolled out across the enterprise with just a few "clicks". Therefore, Docker container management by Portainer is a perfect match."

"MQTT brokers form the communication backbone of the industrial internet of things and lie at the core of most architectural designs. They facilitate the connectivity and data transmission among things as well as applications on the edge, in the cloud, and in hybrid setups bridging the world of OT and IT. However, managing a fleet of MQTT brokers through different versions and configurations requires diligence and knowledge, which is greatly simplified and supported using Portainer as the management platform"

Portainer gives us the flexibility to work with different software tools using the same UI and API. Especially the API provides us new opportunities as a software vendor and as a system integrator in the digital transformation market. Portainer is available from the edge to the cloud without any vendor lock-in. Thanks to the whole Portainer-Team to save us a lot of time and work!

“The benefits of partnering with Portainer were evident to our team very quickly. LiveSwitch involves a number of complex systems that have to scale up and down dynamically, at extreme scale, with massive throughput and a tremendously low tolerance for any sort of latency. This complexity lends itself well to a powerful container management platform such as Portainer.”
